Can you “automatically” qualify for Social Security Disability?

The answer to this question is definitely “no.”  However, there are certain conditions which can qualify you for Social Security Disability if you meet certain criteria as defined by the Social Security “Blue Book.”  Formally known as Disability Evaluation Under Social Security, the Social Security Blue Book outlines the criteria or “listings” required to qualify for Social Security for a series of different physical and mental ailments.

If your doctor is able to state that you meet the criteria for the listing of your ailment as defined by the Blue Book, you can qualify for Social Security Disability without having to have other factors, such as your residual functional capacity, considered.  This is good because meeting the qualifications for a listing is a much more black and white, pass/fail standard than the additional factors that must be examined if you don’t meet a listing.

The Listings

The Blue Book is divided into two parts: Part A, for adults, and Part B, for children.

Part A: Adults

Within Part A, you can find the listings for:

  • Musculoskeletal System.
  • Special Senses and Speech.
  • Respiratory System.
  • Cardiovascular System.

  • Genitourinary Disorders.

  • Skin Disorders.
  • Endocrine Disorders.
  • Congenital Disorders that Affect Multiple Body Systems.
  • Neurological.
  • Mental Disorders.
  • Malignant Neoplastic Diseases.
  • Immune System Disorders.

Part B: Children

Within Part B, readers find information about:

  • Growth Impairment.
  • Musculoskeletal System.
  • Special Senses and Speech.
  • Respiratory System.
  • Cardiovascular System.
  • Digestive System.
  • Genitourinary Disorders.
  • Hematological Disorders.
  • Skin Disorders.
  • Endocrine Disorders.
  • Congenital Disorders that Affect Multiple Body Systems.
  • Neurological.
  • Mental Disorders.
  • Malignant Neoplastic Diseases.
  • Immune System Disorders.
